Your gas water heater is a well engineered reliable appliance. With a tank type water heater it is really very simple when you understand it operation properties. The gas control valve is the heart of your water heater. The gas control valve takes care of several water heater functions. The first thing it does is meter the amount of gas delivered to your water heaters burner assembly. The control valve controls the gas supply to your pilot light and keeps a steady supply. The control valve also has to make sure the pilot light stays lit, if this is not done the pilot light could go out and fill the space with gas. This would result in an explosive situation. |
This is avoided by an important safety device called a thermocouple. The burner assemble has a separate circuit for the pilot light and main burner that heats the tank. This is an important function it burns the pilot light directly under the thermocouple. The thermocouple is made up of two dissimilar metals that when heated create a electric charge or currant. This provides all the power you water heater needs to operate. This current is used to power an electro magnet in the gas valve that enables flow or turns off the gas to the water heater control valve. This is what tells your water heater the pilot light is out pretty simply. |
The next issue your water heater control valve has to deal with is when to turn the water heater main burner on and off. This is done with a temperature probe that extends into the tank. Once the control valve has the tank water temperature it uses a thermostat to call for gas to fire the main burner. Once up to operating temperature the gas valve shuts the supply off to the water heaters main burner leaving the pilot light lit. This cycle is repeated over and over again for years. There is a lot of engineering that went into making your water heater simple and efficient. |

This is a typical tank type water heater burner assemble. Today’s water heaters use a sealed combustion chamber that is vapor resistant to gas fumes in a garage or inside your home.
